Car rental safety
« on: March 12, 2019, 02:09:16 AM »
Hello,

We would love some input from members here. We are looking at car hire options (from Málaga) and think Centauro is probably our best bet. We are however not sure if their "Smart" excess insurance is worth it (at ~120 EUR it is about 4 times as expensive as the car itself!). We are planning on visiting a few places in Cabo de Gata as well as driving in Vera and perhaps Mazarrón.

We don't know how much we should worry about safety, things people breaking windows, roads that may be hard on the car (we are looking at you Cala de Plomo!)... Do you think this insurance is worth it? Any stories of vandals, thieves or nasty roads? Or we are just worrying too much? Problem is that by not taking the insurance the excess is over 1000 EUR and any damage to the car will be taken from that.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I don't know will that help you, this is my last year experience with "La Manga Rent a Car"
We collect car at Malaga airport, bring it back at Alicante airport, 15 days for 403 euros.
The car rental price includes a fully comprehensive insurance cover with a 500€ excess. It means the cars are (as always) fully insured with an excess of 500€, so you are up to 500€ responsible for any damages on the car. Wheels and tyres are never insured, so you need to replace and pay for them if they get damaged.
They didn't ask for any deposit, just collect car with full tank, and drive where you want...

Car type: A (Fiat 500 or similar)
P/u date: July, 25th 2018
P/u location: San Javier airport. Flight EI0578 at 09:50
D/o date: August, 8th 2018
D/o location: Alicante airport. Flight EI0575 (22:00) at 19:30
Duration: 15 days
Price: 403,35 €

Excess insurance from car rental companies is very expensive. Avoid.

Buy excess insurance direct from an insurance company such as insurance4carhire car hire which I use. But there are many others that you will find online.

A full year's excess insurance for Europe will cost around £40. You can also buy it for the number of days you need which may save you a few pounds.

Thank you guys for your input. We would ideally like to buy excess insurance from a third party like the one recommended by Roy but being Latin American residents we haven’t found any company that will service us. We are left with either no excess insurance and risking fraudulent activity by the rental company (Centauro seems to be the least worst of the ones we’ve seen but still has a few horror stories) or actual damage by us driving in unpaved Cabo de Gata.

Our other concern was someone trying to break in the car and smashing the windows or something but it seems that the only way to protect against something like that is paying the ridiculously expensive insurance that the car hire company offers.

You shouldn't compare the cost of the insurance to the cost of hiring the car.

You should compare the cost of the insurance to the cost of what you might have to pay out in the case of an incident.  So,   damage and theft of the car is usually covered by the company's insurance policy.  However, as with all insurance policies, there is an excess on claims.

In the case of rental vehicles,  this excess is usually around 1000€.  Whereas on your private motor insurance policy it's more likely in the region of 250€.  So what you are actually purchasing is protection against paying that 1000€ excess in the event of an insurance claim.

The questions you need to ask yourself is:
1.  Would I rather hand out 120€ now, which may or may not save me 880€ later.
OR
2.  Would I rather take the risk of paying out 1000€ in the future in exchange for keeping 120€ in my pocket now.

Effectively the cost of hiring the care is one purchase.
The cost of buying excess protection is a separate purchase.
They are two different products.

Thanks E&S, we do understand the workings of it, however those decisions to be made have to take into account the probabilities of the events occurring.

If for example it turned out to be that the roads in Cabo de Gata are notorious tyre pinchers or that there's safety concerns in Vera regarding people breaking into cars while parked on the streets, paying the 120 EUR excess protection would be an easy choice. If however this things are practically unheard of then we would rather risk having to pay up to the 1000 EUR excess knowing that the likelihood of that happening is minimal.

Hi there. https://www.icarhireinsurance.com allows to purchase for many nationalities including Latin Am countries - not quite sure if yours is on the list but worth checking. Much more sensible option than purchasing insurance from car hire company.
