Internet speeds and costs?
« on: June 10, 2018, 11:11:52 PM »
Hi,

Any residents of VP - what speeds do you get?
What do you pay (pm)?
How reliable is it?
What providers can you recommend - and who to avoid?

Many thanks - Good reliable internet is paramount to us.

I have only 10 days experience and am in Antas, but not far from VP
I have a small satellite dish type internet. It is with instelNET.
10MB download and 2mb up is the official speed, but speed tests say 10mb each way
I am a heavy user and so far have not noticed any outage. Reliable is also very important to us too, so all good so far
It is 36.30 euro per month

There seem to be lots of other providers here, but I don't know enough about any to recommend any....
I think there is also fiber in the area too, but don't know the costs

Great info - Thanks Eddy and Claire  ;D

Who else has a decent internet connection in Vera Playa and can offer some info?

Do any internet providers also offer a combined sim package for mobile phones including data?

If anyone can advise we would be grateful - Thanks! :)

I inherited a satellite InstelNET internet when I bought in Villaricos. It has a small transmitter (?) about the size of your fist. It works well and had no outages when I have been there. Cost is 25 Euros a month. No idea of speeds but it does all I need. Can recommend.

Many thanks for the info.

Have you ever logged into " speedtest.net " (or similar) it will give you an accurate upload and download speed.

I would be interested to hear what speeds you get.

All the Best - T&S

Fibre Optic seems to be available in some parts. I'll be there on Saturday for a week and will be staying in a flat in Mirador de Vera that was advertised as having fibre. I would have preferred staying in a nudist complex but I couldn't find a place that had what sounded like reliable internet. I need to work while I'm there and it's too important for my work, so I didn't want to take the chance on a 4G or WiMax system. Anyway, the temperature will drop quite a bit on Sunday so I'm less bothered now.

Thank you, decent reliable internet is very important.
We will wait with interest.
Hope you have a great time while you are there  ;D

Any additional information will be welcome - Thanks !

Well, the provider is Vodafone and speed is around 50Mbps. The owner mentioned he had another modem if there was any problems. I presume that means a 4G router. I might ask if I can test it for a day or two as I'd be keen to know this myself as I'm thinking about buying here, but internet options are going to influence my decision.

Thanks 50 is very good!
Your info is very much appreciated, do let us know how you get on. We're looking to purchase in the near future also.

All the best!  ;D

The owner very kindly lent me his 4G Router which I had for half of today. Not an exhaustive test, but enough to give me an idea. I was actually impressed. It didn't drop the connection once. And we did a speed test and it was also around 50Mbps upload and download. However, he did tell me that he had to call the operator (Vodafone) during the summer because the speeds were really slow - between 0.5 and 2Mbps. They said it was due to the number of people here in July and August and there are only 4 transmitters serving the area. It doesn't make financial sense for them to install more for the sake of 2 months a year. So that's slightly disappointing as I'd definitely like to spend some time here in the summer. I'd also be slightly concerned about the data allowance. Vodafone gives you 40GB per month. I monitor my usage over the last couple of days and it seems I average almost 1GB per full day use on my work computer. If I was here for a full month that's 75% of it used and not counting any personal use. I think if you were streaming or downloading a lot of videos or using IPTV, you might get close to your limit in a month.

I saw two flats today but when I used Vodafone's coverage checker it said Fibre wasn't available but I could get ADSL, which also has a limit but it's double at 80GB. Next step is to go up to the Vodafone shop in Vera and see if I can get any more info on when Fibre might be available.

Fantastic info! Much appreciated.

We would need unlimited and at 50 would be nice.
We'd eat 40Gig in a fortnight if and where possible.
Real problem in the area, and 4G sounds unreliable?

Many thanks for this and look forward to your very useful info updates!

Cheers! ;-)

Well I didn't make it to the Vodafone shop in the end as I was viewing more properties right up until I left Vera yesterday morning. Vodafone seem to be the only one offering fibre, I guess the own the cables. Their coverage checker is a bit different from Orange and Movistar in that it doesn't ask for block numbers, flat numbers and all those more intricate details of the address - just the street and number. From that and from talking to the owner of the flat I stayed in, it sounds like if fibre is going in to the cabinet on the complex then you should be able to get it. The owner said they ran the fibre cable from the cabinet to his flat when they installed, so it's not using any existing lines from the cabinet. So I tried working out which complexes have it and it seems Bahia de Vera, Torremar Natura, Vera Natura and Natura World have coverage. I was only looking at naturist developments so there are probably others. Mirador de Vera is where I stayed, so it's available there.

For the ones that said there was no fibre but ADSL, all it quoted was a download of "up to" 30Mbps. It didn't mention upload but with ADSL I wouldn't expect it to be more than about 2Mbps.

It's tricky, because until you actually book an installation and they do a site survey, you won't know for sure, which is too late once you've already bought the property. I think I'll investigate renting a desk in an office somewhere nearby as a backup. Yes, it would be nice to be able to stream 4K from Netflix, but I can live without that. The most important thing for me is that I'm able to work.

And just to add, Parque Vera was only coming up with ADSL
