New bank open in Spain
« on: November 16, 2018, 05:49:06 PM »
The German bank  N26 (I don't know why it is called that) is now operational in Spain.  It's not for you unless you are happy with an app based bank.  There are no local branches, and also no cheque books, so if you want those it's not the account for you. But for the basic N26 Euro account including a debit card there are NO charges.

The application process can be done in English using your mobile phone and the N26 app. Residents and non-residents in Spain  are eligible to apply. But you must have a Spanish address (but not necessarily your own) for the debit card to be delivered to by post.

I have opened an account and find it straighforward to use with everything in English. You are allocated a German (not a Spanish) IBAN account number because it's a German bank.  You can set up standing orders and and make one off payments in Spain or to other countries. Direct debits can be set up for paying Spanish water and electricty bills, IBI and Basura bills, Community fees etc.

N26 are planning to start offering bank accounts in the UK next year.

There is quite a lot happening in the Fintech space. IMHO Revolut is probably the best if you remember about one or two things but also app based only.
