Property Insurance
« on: August 11, 2015, 09:28:15 PM »
Hi Everyone,

We're on the verge of completing on our purchase of an apartment in Veranda Mar and just wondered if anyone has recommendations regarding insurance. We'll be using the property mainly as a holiday home and possibly renting it as well. All suggestions gratefully received.

Jonesy.

We have insured some of our apartments with MAPFRE and some with Vitalico.  Mapfre is slightly more expensive but better when you make a claim.  All are cheaper than you would expect to pay for the equivalent in the UK.

I have always found Ibex in the Commercial centre good value & competitive for house/contents/ cars. For me they have the advantage of employing some English staff, as well as Spanish. They understand our need for English style policies in English. I know quiet a few people who have had to claim. They all seemed to be treated well & swiftly. However I have heard good things about Mapfre also.

Thanks for the ideas, you've given us a starting point so we can get things in place once we come over in Sept. Just need the bank & solicitors to finally complete the deal and we can get sorted.

all the best

I am insured with Liberty Seguros (part of the American insurance group Liberty).  Their local agent is Maxine Morgan.  You can find her most mornings at her desk inside the shop Forget me Not  at Las Buganvilas. Maxine speaks English and is English. Policies are in English.

I did look into insuring through a UK broker specialising in insuring second homes abroad (these brokers are easy to find online). Tend to be more expensive than Spanish insurers but include extras such as being able to claim for travel from UK to Spain in the event of an emergency. UK insurance brokers are also of course subject to regulation by the UK authorities.

The solicitor that I used in Spain to purchase my property has an agency with AXA and she arranged insurance for my apartment. She speaks English and I assume that if I need to claim on the policy, she will be able to sort matters out. She has PoA for me and as I visit a few times each year, I have peace of mind that I will be looked after. I pay Euros 190 per year and see this as relatively inexpensive and hope that my solicitor will be there to help with any claims.

I totally agree.  I've been using the same lawyer for almost 10 years now and she is both an asset and a friend.  A small price to pay for peace of mind (as demonstrated a few months ago following my break-in).

Thanks for all the help with this, everybody. I was thinking that my solicitor in Spain may be able to deal with this, I just wanted to know what experiences others had. My wife and I are complete novices at buying abroad this being our first time. We trust the property company we are using and the solicitor but the reassurance and guidance this forum provides has been welcomed by us both.

Roll on the next couple of weeks so we can be out there in the sun relaxing.
