Considering a holiday in Vera Playa and not sure where to stay? Here is a guide to the alternatives

Natsun Vera Natura La Menara Bahia de Vera Torremar Natura Parque vera Marina Natura Armony Natura Vera Luz

So how do you choose?

Hotel

The hotel alternative is the Vera Playa Hotel. It offers a choice of rooms and mini apartments with fridge and basic cooking facilities. There is a choice of bed and breakfast, half or full board or fully inclusive. The food is a typical buffet service with a barbeque on the beachside terrace. The hotel is naturist, but you must dress for meals and you must dress after 8pm. You can book independently by phoning 0034 950 46 74 75. Receptionists have good English.

Self Catering

Self catering apartments are located in a series of urbanisations within the Naturist Zone, an urbanisation is a small estate of apartments and houses. Generally speaking, English privately owned apartments are likely to be furnished and equipped to a level that we would expect for a good holiday. Some that are Spanish owned and managed are a little basic.

Natsun was the first Naturist Urbanisation. I believe it is 20 to 30 years old. El Cano 1 and 2 are front line to the beach and apartments vary enormously. Many are studios, some are very basic and rather old, some of the older apartments have been beautifully renovated, there are also some new apartments (Elcano III) and some small bungalows (La Medina). You need to ask specific questions about location, how old is the apartment, what is its condition, level of equipment etc. Those in excellent condition are in a prime location, but some are very basic and would only suit the "happy camper" holidaymaker.

Vera Natura is also front line to the beach, it consists of 200 apartments, one bedroomed and 2 bedroomed on the ground floor, 2 bedroom duplexes that occupy the 1st and 2nd floor with an internal staircase. Vera Natura has beautifully mature gardens, much of which are enclosed by hedges, belonging to the ground floor apartments. It has a lovely outdoor pool and an indoor pool which is heated in winter. The urbanisation is about 10 years old. Some apartments are a little basic, with 2 ring hob and no oven, but the apartments are very spacious, with a big round bath in the large bathroom. Some are also rather basically furnished. However, some are excellent. There is a communal satellite system, so most apartments have CNN and Eurosport.

La Menara?is second line behind Vera Natura and with "Moorish" architectural detail. It consists of 56 apartments in 7 blocks of 8, one and two bedroomed on the ground, two bedroomed on the first floor and one bed on the second. It was completed in 2002. La Menara has the most spacious feel of all the urbanisations, as the gardens have no hedges. There is plenty of green space between the apartment blocks and around the pool. The pool and communal gardens are very pretty. The pool is heated in early and late season to extend swimming into spring and autumn. Some apartments have 2 ring hob and no oven, others are very well furnished and equipped. Again, these are very spacious apartments with the large luxury marble bathrooms and granite worktops. The communal satellite system gives BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 and ITV3. La Menara has secure parking.

Bahia de Vera
is a larger urbanisation, with 200 apartments in long 2 storey blocks and one apartment block of 4 floors, Brisamar. There are also 3 large detached houses. Bahia has lovely apartments, some have private gardens, others have huge terraces.Bahia has 2 pools, one of which is covered and has heating, The new president is doing a fine job, the urbanisation looks pretty, the gardens are well kept and the indoor pool is being properly maintained so all year swimming is good. Bahia de Vera has secure parking.

Torremar Natura is 3rd line to the beach, behind Bahia de Vera. These apartments are beautifully appointed, but small. Some on the "outside" of the urbanisation have lovely patios overlooking the pool and communal gardens, but the ones in the middle are quite high density. There is a pretty outdoor pool and a lovely indoor pool that is heated throughout the winter. Torremar Natura has secure parking.

Parque Vera is 2nd line to the beach, behind Natsun. This development was built in five phases, each phase being a separate urbanisation. Parque Vera 1 is an urbanisation of townhouses, built in a square around central beautiful communal gardens and pool. The town houses are 2 or 3 bedrooms and there are also 18 apartments, large studios, 1 bedroomed and 2 bedroomed apartments. There is private parking, though not all inside the gated community. Each subsequent development is different but maintains the theme and they are appointed to a high quality. The later developments consist of 3 storey blocks of apartments, some have lovely round balconies.

Marina Natura is a true front line urbanisation with a gate from the garden directly to the beach. It is a small urbanisation consisting of 20 two bedroomed apartments built in 2004. All apartments are south facing with a private terrace and a marvellous view of the sea and the Mojácar mountain. The apartments have two bedrooms and are equipped with central air conditioning. Marina Natura has secure covered private parking for each apartment and a communal swimming pool. There is a community Wi-Fi system available for one computer per apartment and most apartments are connected with a community satellite TV system.

Armony Natura is front line to the beach, next to Natsun. This is a small development of apartments that were very expensive, they have sophisticated security systems and electronic gadgetry and are very well appointed. These can be recognised by the very distinctive blue domes.

Vera Luz is a small scale but spacious urbanisation of 40 apartments in the middle of the naturist zone. It is situated between the La Medina bungalows and the Parque Vera urbanisation, it's only a few steps from the beach and the Natsun bar. All the apartments are facing east/south east, the ground floor apartments have there own private garden, the apartments on the first floor a terrace and some a roof terrace.

So how do you choose?

Different apartments suit different people. What are your priorities? When do you plan to travel? What is your lifestyle?

The first consideration is aspect. If you are planning to winter in Vera Playa you need to avoid a North facing apartment, or you will get no sun. Do you like morning sun or afternoon / evening. You need to ask .If travelling in summer, mosquito nets and fans are the minimum requirement, from mid July to mid September, air conditioning will make your nights more comfortable. Does the patio have some shade, is there a sun canopy or parasols? If not, your patio will be too hot to use in the afternoons.

Security is important, like every resort, Vera Playa occasionally has trouble with opportunist thieves. How secure is the apartment, does it have a safe? Does it have rejas (security bars). In summer, parking is quite important as the streets are full, but all year round secure parking is a bonus.

Do you like to eat out all the time? If so, a studio apartment might be right for you, or you may be happy with a 2 ring hob and a basic kitchen. If you are an enthusiastic cook, with the lovely Mediterranean produce, you need to ask about the level of equipment. It's difficult to cook with virtually no utensils. Is there a barbeque?

Is English TV a priority? Can you live without your soaps? So far as I am aware. Only La Menara has a community English Channel system, but many private apartments have Sky free to air system or even sky package, one or two have broadband internet. Work out your own personal priorities, make a list and ask the questions.

Lots of private advertisers offer excellent quality, well serviced apartments furnished and equipped to suit Northern European holidaymakers, in all the urbanisations. As a group you could all choose to stay in the same urbanisation. Travelling is easy, public transport from the airports is possible, most people letting apartments will organise airport transfers for you (for a supplement) but a hire car will allow you to enjoy the fabulous surroundings and explore pretty villages, the mountains and other fabulous naturist beaches.

The best airport for Vera Playa is Almeria, but Murcia (San Javiar) and Alicante are less than 2 hours away. Now that there are several naturist resorts within easy travelling distance and a good network of roads in this part of Spain, you could easily organise a multi centre trip. Fly into Murcia airport and try El Portus, Vera Playa, Eagle Peaks and Costa Natura. Fly out of Malaga. One way car hires are no more expensive, and internet booking has opened up these possibilities at very competitive prices. Have an extended trip and fit in Granada, Seville, do some skiing or take in a fiesta.

Spain is a fabulous place for a Naturist holiday, combined with culture, gastronomy, architecture and history. Come and enjoy it!
